En 1945, dans une ville d'Allemagne occupée par les alliés, un photographe anglais qui couvre la défaite allemande assiste à la libération d'un camp de concentration. Il décide de traverser le pays pour découvrir et photographier le peuple qui a permis l'existence de telles atrocités. Il part sur les routes avec pour chauffeur un jeune soldat tout juste arrivé, qui n'a rien vu de la guerre.
